"Survival in SD with no Electricity"

  • Have a fireplace put in!
  • Light candles and play board games
  • Have lots of candles on hand!
  • Cook on the camp stove
  • Don't throw out the wood stove in the basement
  • Try to read or play games without going blind in the limited light
  • Keep cell phones charged from car chargers
  • SMILE
  • Make S'mores over hurricane lamp. Roast the marshmallows over the globe cover and use potato nails with the marshmallows. Enjoy!
  • Buy a generator "before" it is an emergency
  • Move to Alaska...it's light half of the year for 24hrs and you can burn all the wood you want. Then, the other half of the year is dark so buy some wine and you can have as many and as long romantic times by your burning wood.
  • Go live with your kids, they always seem to have money so I'm sure they would buy something to make sure they had electricity for their kids...ha!
  • Snuggle in and make the best of it - play cards, laugh and enjoy your time together.
  • Sleep close together!
  • Warming water on a kerosene heater for hot chocolate
  • Tell the kids about things you did without when you were little
  • Use your body heat wisely-cuddle with someone
  • Wear gloves
  • Have extra candles
  • Shut doors
  • When desperate, roast a hot dog or marshmallow over a candle
  • Buy a generator!
  • Drive across the field to a friend's house that has a generator (roads blocked)
  • Hang a flashlight from your ceiling fan. It works great for playing cards with your kids. You can rotate the light by turning the fan blades
  • Be patient
  • Call all the neighbors to see if they have electricity
  • Play lots of board games
  • Make sure your generator works BEFORE the power goes out!
  • Go on a cruise!
  • Snuggle - ALOT!
  • Live with 94 year old mother who has been there! Be sure she still knows how to cook!
  • Be patient...pray for safety!
  • Communicate!
  • Write letters
  • Keep a journal.
  • Make the best of it by spending quality time with the kids.
  • Start a fire the old fashioned way and make some great soup.
  • Let the kids roast marshmallows and sleep in the living room close to the fireplace
